These Prehistoric rock carvings or Petroglyphs can be found in many highland locations in England, Scotland and Wales.

Other local sites may be visited at Aislaby Moor, Allan Tofts (Goathland),Near Moor (Whorlton) and Warren Moor (Kildale).

It is not known for sure when the stones were carved or for what purpose. The classic cup and ring is a hole with a circle pecked out around it as seen in the large example below. Some stones on the Moor are definitely cup and rings carvings, some are possibly due to erosion or damage from machinery used to cut heather.
